As an economist, educator, and first-generation immigrant, my journey through academia and teaching at Northeastern University has profoundly shaped my understanding of diversity’s pivotal role in education. My philosophy is rooted in the belief that education serves as a great equalizer, transcending boundaries of race, religion, social status, and political persuasion. I embrace the rich tapestry of human experiences and backgrounds, recognizing that our differences are not just about visible diversity but also encompass age, disability, personality, and sexual orientation.

My personal journey from China to the United States for higher education has been instrumental in shaping my perspective. I was 20 when I started college, inspired by professors from diverse cultural backgrounds who enriched my academic experience and broadened my worldview. This diversity in academia not only fosters a better understanding of the world but also cultivates a space where innovative ideas and perspectives thrive.

Throughout my teaching career, I have been privileged to teach a diverse group of students, including those from Korea, India, China, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso.
